HC grants bail to bank robbery accused

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday granted bail to Rajesh Das, one of the accused involved in a bank robbery case reported at Verla-Canca in December 2017.

The High Court ordered that Das, a native of Bihar be released on furnishing personal bond of Rs 30,000 with one or more sureties of like amount to the satisfaction of the trial Court. The applicant has been asked to furnish his address while residing in the State and not to leave the State without the permission of the trial Court. 

The applicant has also been asked to furnish his residential address and contact details to the trial Court as well as to the Investigating Officer and to attend the trial regularly on the dates fixed for hearing of the trial. He has been further asked not to tamper with the witnesses. 

Das and four others were arrested by the Mapusa police on the charge of committing robbery in the Indian Overseas Bank, Verla-Canca branch on December 8, 2017, and decamping with cash Rs 11.86 lakh, at knife point. The accused had also fired gun shots at the alert citizens, who tried to stop them. 

During the hearing, Adv Sahil Sardessai, who argued on behalf of Das, said that if released on bail, Das will reside with Tulsi Das at Pinto Wado, Canca, Bardez and submitted that Tulsi Das will stand as surety for the applicant. The accused have also been chargsheeted under Sections 395, 397 and 120-B of IPC and Section 3 read with Sections, 25, 27 of the Arms Act.
