MAPUSA: Chartered Accountant Rahul Prabhu Mhambre on Thursday informed that the High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday passed an interim order directing the State government to take immediate steps on three urgent issues relating to drinking water, privacy screens and seating arrangements in the COVID wards of Goa Medical College and Hospital’s  Super-Specialty Block.

“The High Court passed the order after hearing my Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in reference to the long-pending issues being faced by the relatives of the patients admitted at the COVID wards of the GMC’s Super-Specialty Block,” Mhambre stated in a press release.

“The Honourable High Court heard the matter on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 and passed an interim order requiring the government to take immediate steps on three urgent issues relating to drinking water, privacy screens and seating arrangements,” Mhambre said.

“I am thankful to the Honourable High Court Bench for its expeditious hearing and interim order which will lead to relief for Goans already in considerable anguish due to COVID infection. The petition will come up for further orders on Thursday, June 10, 2021,” Mhambre added.

“This is to inform the members of public that I have filed a PIL in reference to the long-pending issues being faced by the relatives of the patients admitted at the COVID wards of the GMCH’s Super-Specialty Block. This petition was filed in my individual capacity on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the Goa Bench of the Honourable High Court of Bombay at Goa,” he stated.

“The prayers made in the petition were related to various issues such as the non-availability of drinking water for relatives, lack of privacy screens for patients, the restriction on bringing home-cooked food into the facility, the necessity for seating arrangements and charging points for relatives, the condition of toilets, and other requirements such as photocopy machine, which were all creating great inconvenience and added distress to the COVID patients and the relatives,” he further stated.
