HC refuses to stay Zilla Panchayat polls

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has refused to stay the ensuing Zilla Panchayat (ZP) polls.

Activists Sudip Tamhankar and Keval Palyekar had, on December 2, moved the High Court stating that the ZP polls are scheduled as per the old notification, which is not valid, after the code was lifted.

“The SEC in February 2020 had declared to hold the ZP elections on March 22. But due to COVID-19 and lockdown, it was rescheduled and the SEC in the meantime lifted the election code,” the petitioners said.

The petition had called for a new notification for the ZP polls, which has not been followed in the present circumstance.

The ZP poll dates have already been announced as December 12 for polling and December 14 for counting.
