HC reserves order against CCP nominated councillors

PANJIM: A Division Bench of the Bombay High Court at Goa comprising Justice M S Sonak and Justice R N Laddha on Tuesday reserved the judgment on the petition filed by social activist Adv Aires Rodrigues challenging the appointment of Kabir Makhija and Kishore Sastry as nominated councillors at the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP).  

Arguments which commenced last week concluded on Tuesday. Adv Rodrigues had submitted that the appointment of former councillors Makhija and Sastry as nominated councillors was in total breach and violation of law as they did not possess the required special knowledge and experience in municipal administration.

Rodrigues also submitted that while Sastry in his biodata had stated that his educational qualification was ITI in electricals besides a councillor for one term that Makhija had stated that besides a diploma in civil engineering he was a sportsman and did modelling at various events and also a councillor for one term and also deputy mayor for one year.

Adv Raunak Rao and Adv Nitin Sardesai argued on behalf of Makhija and Sastry respectively. They told the Court that the appointment of both nominated councillors was as per the Section 9 (1) of CCP Act and that the duo possess experience and to the subjective satisfaction of the government.
