MARGAO, AUG 16
House-to-house surveillance got underway in the Commercial Capital on Monday, with health workers scanning the Khareband looking out of cases of fever in the locality in the wake of H1N1 flu.
Four teams attached to the Margao Urban Health Centre, each consisting of four workers, fanned out to the nook and corner of Khareband this morning to unearth any case of flu amongst the residents.
Incidentally, out of the 312 persons screened in the locality, only around 11 had ordinary fever and were taking treatment, informed Margao Urban Health officer, Dr Geeta Kakodkar.
The screening and surveillance was carried out by Krishna Panchwadkar along with health workers as per the guidelines issues by the district Collector, South. “Guidelines were issued to the health workers to find out fever cases in the Khareband area. Besides the fact that only 11 ordinary cases of fever were detected in the locality, it was heartening to note that people were well aware of H1N1 and its symptoms”, he added.
Panchwadkar said that Khareband was selected as the first ward for the surveillance work due to reports that fever cases have been detected from the locality.
He said the ongoing drive will continue as per the Collector’s directions, adding that the health workers have also laid stress on schools and slums as part of the awareness drive on H1N1. “The health team have conveyed to the residents to immediately report any case of fever or cold either to the Margao Urban Health centre or Hospicio Hospital”, he added.
The health workers also cleaned the area by getting rid of breeding sites, by opening vessels and utensils with the cooperation of the residents.
After the drive, Dr Kakodkar filed a compliance report with Ashutosh Apte, Mamlatdar in the District Collectorate, South. She said the health workers would concentrate on the Gogol area in the next two-days to not only screen the residents, but to spread awareness on flu and fever.
