HEARTWRENCHING TALE: Loan burden weigh down homeless couple

Residents ask why demolition after almost 40 years of their stay

DABOLIM: Residents, whose house was demolished, said that they have no clue what funnel zone is. They were staying there for over almost 40 years happily. They knew that they couldn’t built a house due to the airport and ask ‘why action only now’. “But today after so many years we are forced to knock the doors of the court to save the roof over our heads,” they regret.  Team Herald visited the site at Dabolim wherein the house was demolished on Wednesday.

An old lady speaking her heart out to Herald, said “We don’t know anything about the funnel zone, all we knew is that we couldn’t built huge house not even 1+1 floor due the airport as this could be dangerous for the aviation operation. Today families are disturbed with what is going on, many moved court to save the house while few have been turned homeless.”

Forty four houses were saved due to the High Court’s stay order. On Thursday, when Herald TV descended at ground zero the couple was nowhere to be seen. The neighbours were tight lipped fearing consequences. The spot was turned into debris of metal sheets and household items.

The owner had pledged his wife’s gold to secure the loan and build the house.

“My wife’s gold is given as collateral to pay for the house, and now the house is being demolished. I was the first to build a house in this area before my neighbours, and now they all approached the court but I don’t have monitory strength to fight in courts anymore,” the owner said.

The desperate family claims that they will not move from the area. “We have nowhere to go and no matter how many times they try we will stay here only, they have also claimed issues with the measurement,” said the owner.
