Heated discussion over Illegal Scrap yards operating across Goa, Min assures formulating policy for scrapyards

Day 5 of this ongoing assembly session started on a heated note when
the Leader of Opposition, LoP Yuri Alemao raised the question of illegal scrap
yards in Goa. Alemao alleged  that  the state authorities are hand in gloves with
the scrap yard mafia endangering the lives of Goans. He also highlighted that
nearly 680 plus scrapyards are operating across the state from which 50% are
illegal and more than 1.58 lakh sq meters of land is being used for the
operations of these illegal scrapyards.

He also questioned when will the Government take action against
the illegal scrap yards which are operating in residential and also in the comunidade
lands which is hazardous for the public.

However, Revenue Minister Babush Monserrate replied saying “We are
in the process of formulating policy for the scrapyards”.  380 scrap yards in north and south Goa. The
carrying of hazardous material will be taken care of in the Scrap yard policy,
assured the minister.

Chief minister Pramod Sawant said all scarp yards have been
operating in the last 20 to 25 years. They have been served notices by
authorities.
