Heavy downpour throws normal life out of gear; Goa put on orange alert

Incessant rains brings down trees, power lines; roads, nullahs, fields flooded, streets waterlogged; landslides disrupt traffic, fire personnel on toes

PANJIM: Normal life was thrown out of gear as heavy to very heavy rains led to flooding in several parts of the State, along with incidents of waterlogging, tree felling and power outages. State recorded nearly 58.6mm (2.7 inches) of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 8.30am of Sunday. 

The hinterland areas of Quepem, Sanguem and Sanquelim recorded the maximum downpour. The first two-days of the July month caused havoc with State witnessing over 137mm (5 inches) of rainfall. The deteriorated condition of roads and last minute patch works further exacerbated the situation across the State, which is likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers in the coming week. 

The State is been put on Orange  alert for the next five days. Several minor accidents due to water logging and other rainfall related incidents were reported across State. 

According to IMD, the total seasonal rainfall has touched 793.7 mm which is still 19.8 per cent lesser than the normal seasonal showers of 989.9 mm as on date. “Due to strengthening of the southwest monsoon condition, the State will experience heavy to very heavy showers in the coming days,” IMD said in the bulletin issued. 

The data also reveals excess amount of rains received by other Stations too including Mapusa, Mormugao, Old Goa, Dabolim. Sanguem and Ponda. 

IMD said that the existence of cyclonic circulation and off-shore trough is likely to help in increased rainfall activities over the coast. The Fishermen as directed not to venture into the sea during the period due to rough weather conditions. 

The month of June had ended with 28 per cent deficit rains. The month had recorded total 655mm (25.7 inches) of rains as against the normal average of 914mm (35.9inches).
