Heavy downpours cause significant damage, disruption in Goa

Several parts of Goa were ravaged by heavy downpours and strong winds on Tuesday night, leading to significant damage and disruption across the State. The relentless rain triggered widespread flooding, affecting numerous areas and causing immense hardship for residents. The powerful gusts of wind exacerbated the situation by uprooting trees and light poles, adding to the destructive impact. Furthermore, landslides were reported in various locations, further aggravating the overall crisis.

On Wednesday, the capital city of Panjim experienced a deluge, receiving an astonishing 202.9 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period. This staggering figure ranks as the 10th highest recorded June rainfall in the past five decades. The heavy downpours resulted in significant water accumulation and posed numerous challenges for residents and infrastructure. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa, moderate rainfall is expected to persist throughout the day.

Among the top three highest recorded June rainfall figures within the last 50 years, June 12, 1999, holds the first position with 366.6 mm, followed by June 16, 1992, with 350.8 mm, and June 15, 1996, with 342.9 mm. The data captured for June 28, 2023, measured rainfall levels over a 24-hour period, ending at 08:30 AM IST. This substantial rainfall not only affected Panjim but also nearby regions. Valpoi experienced intense showers, accumulating 107.7 mm of rainfall, while Ponda witnessed 90.0 mm during the same period.
