PANJIM: The formation of a low-pressure area over Madhya Pradesh and a trough over the Arabian Sea are likely to increase rainfall in Goa, as a warning of heavy showers till August 14 has been issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The southwest monsoon has been active over the State since its onset, with bumper rainfall reported till date. Since June 1 till August 10, the State recorded 108.9 inches of rain, which is 23 per cent above the normal average of 88.27 inches.

IMD Goa observatory scientist Rahul Mohan said the low pressure area, formed over the Bay of Bengal on August 9, has moved west wards and now lies over North East Madhya Pradesh. In addition to that, there is an offshore trough over the Arabian Sea from Karnataka coast to Lakshadweep. “The combined system will increase rainfall activities over Goa,” he said.
As such, heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong wind currents at a speed of 40-50kmph are forecast for the State till August 14. Fishermen are warned against venturing into the sea during the period.
The State has been witnessing moderate to heavy rains since Sunday. August has reported 17 inches of rainfall so far.
