Heavy rainfall in State till July 15: IMD

Rains are likely to be accompanied with winds at a speed of 25-35 kmph

PANJIM: The State, which has already received 30 per cent excess rainfall for the season, is likely to witness further increase in monsoon activity from Tuesday onwards. 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory in a statement issued on Monday warned of heavy rainfall for the State on July 14-15. Rains are likely to be accompanied with winds at a speed of 25-35 kmph. 

IMD said that the rainfall activity is likely to increase over the coast from July 14, due to the presence of an offshore trough at mean sea level. 

IMD also said that there is also likely formation of shear zone at about 3.1km above mean sea level over North Konkan region and there is possibility of strengthening of westerly winds at 1.5kms above mean sea level. 

An Orange colour warning has been issued for the State for next two days; while a Yellow Colour warning is issued on July 16-17. 

Monsoon currents have been active over the coast for the last few days. State is witnessing continuous downpour. 

From June 1 till Monday (8.30 am), State has received a total 71.09 inches (1741.8mm) of rainfall, as against the normal rains of 54 inches (1335.8mm) during the period, with 30 per cent excess supply. 

The month of June recorded nearly 42 inches of rainfall, while July has received 29 inches of rainfall till Monday, July 13.
