PANJIM: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory has extended the heavy rainfall warning for the State till June 2, due to the formation of a low-pressure area over southeast and adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea around May 31.
IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning from May 31 to June 2, advising fishermen against venturing into deep sea due to rough weather conditions.
“A low-pressure area is very likely to form over southeast and adjoining east central Arabian Sea around May 31. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over east central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea during the subsequent 72 hours,” IMD Goa scientist Rahul Mohan said.
IMD had on Thursday announced that the onset of southwest monsoon over Goa coast is likely to be set on June 5. The monsoon is likely to reach Kerala by June 1.
The weather bureau said that if low pressure area’s position remains in favour for the further north ward advance of monsoon currents, Goa is likely to see the monsoon arrive around its normal date of June 5. “But it largely depends on future course of the system in South East Arabian sea,” it added.
