PANJIM: In light of the red alerts sounded in the coastal parts of Kerala and Karnataka, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours in Goa.
IMD Goa Director Dr Krishnamurty Padgalvar said that due to circulations at Saurashtra, Northern Konkan as well in the South, along with the small topography of the State maximises Goa’s chances of having the effect to the changes along the coast.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and there are chances that we could see extreme weather conditions after 72 hours. However, since we still have time at hand, if needed we will issue an alert 48 hours in advance. For the moment we have issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places in Goa for the next two days,” he stated.
In a statement, IMD Goa issued a warning stating, “Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at a few places with very heavy rain at isolated places over the State on July 23 and 24, 2019. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places on July 25 and 26, 2019.”
As a precautionary measure, the Department has warned against any activities along the beaches and issued a warning to the fishermen stating, “Rough to very rough sea conditions are likely to prevail over Southwest and Westcentral Arabian Sea during the next five days. Rough to very rough sea conditions (wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph) are likely to prevail over South West and adjoining Central Arabian sea during next 5 days (July 22 to 25, 2019). Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during next five days.”
Between 8.30 am on July 21 and 8.30 am of July 22, Valpoi recorded the maximum rainfall of 17 cms in the State followed by Sanquelim and Sanguem with 7 cms of rainfall each. While Quepem received 6 cms of rainfall, Canacona received 5 cms, Ela Old Goa received 4 cms, Pernem received 3cms and Dabolim and Margao received 2 cms of rainfall each.
Meanwhile Panjim and Mormugao received 7.2 cms of rainfall each between 8.30 am on July 21 and 5.30 pm on July 22.
