MARGAO: The incessant rains on Friday resulted in different parts of Margao getting flooded as the gutters were overflowing and the proposed burial ground at Haralem in Sirvodem was totally under water. Fire Services had to attend to eight calls of trees falling. Fortunately nothing much was damaged as they only fell across the road affecting flow of traffic.
The continuous rainfall on Friday morning resulted in the roads around the municipal building being flooded and one could see four-wheelers going past spraying water as their tyres cut through the waterlogged lanes.
In fact the cast iron trap on one of gutters was getting lifted and then settling again as the water pressure flowing through the gutter kept increasing. The area around the old municipal building at Old Market was also flooded even though that area was cleaned for the Holy Spirit feast celebrated recently.
In various places of Margao too, the rain water drains were overflowing and River Sal that borders Margao was threatening to breach its banks as it was flowing with full strength. Sirvodem, which is abutting the river was flooded with the drains being chocked.
Haralem in Sirvodem where the burial ground for the muslim community is proposed was totally under water. This gave credence to the villagers’ opposition to having the burial ground there as it would pollute the already contaminated River Sal.
The road under the railway track near Damodar College was totally flooded from Thursday. The water had risen so much that no vehicles could use the under pass which looks like a storm water drain.
The Fire Services had to attend to eight calls of trees falling fortunately there was no much damage caused as they all fell across roads and only people affected were motorists as traffic movement was hampered.
Trees fell across the roads in Margao, Dicarpale, Velim, Aquem Vidyanagar, Nuvem and Benaulim. It took the fire services nearly one and a half hour to clear the tree that had fallen at Dicarpale and till then traffic on the main road to Quepem was affected.
