MARGAO: Incessant rainfall for the past three days has resulted in Margao feast fair vendors sustaining heavy losses. They have now urged the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to extend the feast fair for three more days.
The seven-day feast fair came to an end on Sunday, but water logging due to rains inflicted heavy losses on the hundreds of vendors, who had erected their stalls in the fair.
According to the vendors who have already paid thousands of rupees to the MMC as a feast fair fee, there was very poor response due to the rains. MMC bagged nearly Rs 30 lakh from the feast fair.
Speaking to media persons, Mira Chital, a local vendor claimed that she has not even recovered the money paid as a fee to Municipality.
“The continuous rains have created major hardships, as people have avoided visiting the feast fair. There was almost zero business for the last three days. We want the MMC to extend the fair by at least three more days so that we can recover the losses,” she urged.
Pandhari Naik, another vendor, claimed that all the rain water had entered into his stall and he could not do any business.
“We noticed that there is no proper management pertaining to the flow of rain water, as a result of all the mess over here. Even people visiting the feast fair are unable to walk freely due to the muddy water,” said Naik.
“Our request is to extend the days of the feast fair, keeping in mind the losses incurred by the vendors,” he added. Several other vendors joined the chorus.
Lyndon Pereira, Chairperson of MMC said that he is aware that the situation, but the Chief Officer will take the decision pertaining to extending the days of the feast fair, if required.
“The Chief Officer is the right person to take decisions on the request made by the vendors of the feast fair,” said Pereira.
However, in the evening session on Sunday, a heavy crowd was witnessed in the feast fair to pick up their favourites, mostly pertaining to the ‘Purument’ store.
