Heavy rains keep Margao fire services on toes

MARGAO: Heavy showers which lashed the State for the past four days, left the Margao Fire and Emergency Services busy with calls and rescue operations. 

The data available with the department indicates that for the last four days, the fire personnel handled around 15 calls from the people trapped in their houses which were damaged, saved animals, rescued people from houses which got submerged.

According to the information available, most of these calls were attended on July 8, when heavy rains lashed out Margao and surrounding areas.

On June 7, a tree fell on the house at Benaulim causing damage to the tune of Rs 20,000. The fire tender, which was pressed into service saved property worth Rs 50,000. On the same day, a tree fell on the road at Fatorda paralysing traffic, which was later cleared by the firemen.

On July 8, water entered into a house near the health sub-centre at Manora-Raia causing damages of around Rs 10,000. The fire tender team succeeded in saving property worth Rs 20,000. 

The same day, a wall of house collapsed near Saint Paul Chapel at Pedda-Benaulim incurring loss of Rs 3.35 lakh and in another case waterlogging was reported in a house at Seraulim.

A tree fell on a house at Benaulim, however the locals rushed and saved the property. In another incident, a huge tree got uprooted and damaged a compound wall.

A tree also came crashing on the road and damaged a compound wall at Carmona. The road was immediately cleared by the fire services personnel.

Waterlogging was reported in the three residential houses near Shree Vithal Mandir at Comba-Margao. The Margao Fire Station officer said that loss is not yet estimated. The water from the house was cleared.

An 80-year-old woman, who was locked inside the bathroom was rescued by the fire personnel at Pajifond, Margao. A branch of a mango tree crashed on a compound wall of a house and also on the road near a traffic circle at Borda-Margao causing losses.

Tree uprooting incidents were also reported at Colva, Borda, besides two coconut trees crashed on power lines at Orlim and Benaulim, disrupting power supply to several areas. 

Rescue operations were carried out by Margao fire personnel under the supervision of Fire Station Officer Margao Gil Souza.
