Heavy rains lash State; dip mercury

PANJIM: Heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed the capital and several parts of the State late Thursday evening, effecting a drop in temperatures and bringing welcome relief to denizens.

PANJIM: Heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed the capital and several parts of  the State late Thursday evening, effecting a drop in temperatures and bringing welcome relief to denizens. 
IMD Goa observatory in-charge K V Singh said that low pressure formed over the Kerala coast and led to unseasonal rainfall. He said that the isolated rains and thunder showers can be expected in Goa up to May 10.
The initial light drizzle turned into heavy shows and then petered out. The showers and drizzle effected a dip in temperature from 35 Degree Celsius to 32.7 Degree Celsius, one degree below normal on Thursday. 
The minimum temperature also came down to 24 degree Celsius. 
The day and night temperature for last couple of weeks has been ranging between 34-36 Degree Celsius and 26- 27 Degree Celsius respectively. The humidity has, however continued to remain above normal. 
IMD has issued warning of heavy rainfall for Goa during the next 36-hours. The department has said that the weather would be cloudy with rain and thundershower accompanied by gusty winds. 
OUR VASCO CORRESPONDENT ADDS: Trees were uprooted while power supply was disrupted as heavy rains lashed the port town on Thursday evening.
The rains began at about 7.30 pm, catching people in Vasco off guard and many were seen taking shelter in shops, buildings and under trees.
The power supply was disrupted a short while later, forcing many establishments to shut down for the evening. Electricity department officials told Herald that their linesmen were busy trying to identify the fault and restore power supply.
At about 7.45 pm, a large tree came crashing down on the road near the Chicalim panchayat ground, paralysing traffic on either side of the road till Thursday night. Efforts were on till late night to remove the fallen tree from the road.
