MARGAO: Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds battered Salcete on Tuesday, causing extensive damage to properties and injuring a 92-year-old woman. Four houses suffered significant damage, and a protective wall collapsed, impacting two flats on the ground floor near Nagesh Garden.
According to Gil Souza, Station Fire Officer (FSO) Margao, a mud house wall collapsed at Khareband, injuring 92-year-old Bruzence Pereira. She was promptly taken to South Goa District Hospital for treatment. The estimated loss from this incident is around Rs 50,000.
The protection wall collapse near Nagesh Garden, Borda, caused damage to two ground-floor flats. Additionally, a tree fell on a house near the children’s park at Amrut Nagar, Gogol. Firefighters quickly responded to remove the tree and clear the area.
In another incident, a tree fell on a house at Navelim, causing damages, though the estimated loss remains unknown. Firefighters promptly cleared the fallen tree, ensuring the area was safe.
A tree fell on a house near Raj Mowers at Sao Jose Areal and firefighters also cleared a tree that fell on the road near Costa Factory at Aquem and another tree leaning on a compound wall and road near the old TVS showroom in Borda. The estimated loss from these incidents is approximately Rs 5,000.
Despite the extensive damage to five houses due to uprooted trees during the heavy rains and winds, no other injuries were reported. The torrential downpour disrupted normal life in Salcete, leading to waterlogging and road blockages due to fallen trees.
