PANJIM: Heavy showers continued to lash Goa for the third consecutive day as State recorded nearly five inches of rainfall in the last 48 hours.
In just one-and-half-month, the State has recorded over 78 inches of rainfall, which is 31 per cent excess for the season.
The incessant heavy showers led to major flooding in various parts of the State.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory, which has predicted heavy showers till July 19, said that an off-shore trough and a shear zone over North Konkan region is the reason for very strong monsoon currents.
“Also, a circulation over Gujarat region, though very far from Goa, has increased wind speed of 1.5 and 3.1 km,” IMD said.
From July 15 to July 17 (8.30am), State received 111.6 mm (4.55inches) of rainfall.
As per IMD records, since June 1 till 8.30 am on July 17 (Friday), the State received 78.82 inches (1931.2mm) of rainfall, as against the normal average of 60.42 inches (1480.4mm). A 31 per cent excess rainfall has been recorded so far.
The State’s average rainfall is around 121 inches (2975.6mm).
Meanwhile, IMD has warned of heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds reaching at speeds of 45-55kmph till July 19.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea during the period due to rough sea conditions.
