Heavy vehicles entering Goa to be diverted via Banda for a week: SP

Traffic diversion done in anticipation of the Porvorim flyover construction to ease congestion

PANJIM: In view of the upcoming construction of a flyover bridge at Porvorim, the Traffic Cell of Goa Police on Monday said that heavy vehicles entering Goa with non-essential items will be diverted via Banda-Sankhali-Ponda for a week.

Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Akshat Kaushal, IPS said, the decision has been taken on an experimental basis to see the impact on the traffic load in view of the upcoming flyover.

“A flyover is to be constructed in Porvorim by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and other agencies of the State government. There is a probability that this would impact normal flow of traffic. So as an experiment, from today we are diverting heavy vehicles coming to Goa via Banda,” he said.

SP Kaushal said, “We are coordinating with the police administration of Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra. We hope that this effort will reduce the load on traffic. We will assess the impact of this move and then a final decision will be taken. We are working on alternate roads in coordination with the Public Works Department (PWD) as well. We have given the inputs to them.”

SP Kaushal said the traffic police is working on various alternatives to ensure that residents of Goa or tourists face minimum inconvenience.

“Porvorim is an important stretch which connects North and South Goa and the National Highway is one of the most important bridges of the State of Goa,” he said.
