Heavy vehicles may finally be banned in Chandor shortly

MARGAO: Residents of Chandor appear to be getting some relief finally as the notification published in 2008 banning heavy traffic from passing through the village will be implemented shortly after the villagers met South Goa Collector Agnelo Fernandes on Wednesday.
The villagers led by ex-sarpanch Celina Furtado and former Guirdolim sarpanch Sonia Fernandes pointed out that all trucks including those carrying coal, bricks and anything and everything are passing through the village causing severe hardships to the people.
“The trucks ply at such high speeds and at speed breakers they create loud noise that is truly alarming specially to the senior citizens living in the home for the aged in the village where there is a speed breaker,” a villager said.
When the Collector disclosed that the order was not implemented only because the Transport Department did not provide the sign boards, the villagers offered to finance the signboards and accordingly they were directed to meet the police officials.
Margao Traffic Cell Police Inspector Mohan Gaude gave them details of the size and the text of the signboards while Deputy Superintendent of Police Raju Raut Dessai instructed the police personnel posted at the Chandor outpost to fine trucks plying through the village.
While the villagers are opposed to the movement of heavy vehicles through their village, it is learnt that the local MLA Clafacio Dias has written to the police in support of the trucks plying through the village.
