HERALD ON GROUND: Backlash Against Pay Parking Notification at Colva Beach

In a noteworthy turn of events, citizens of Colva and Benaulim have raised their voices against the recent notification proposing pay parking at Colva Beach. The notification suggests charging fees for parking two-wheelers, four-wheelers, cars, and motorcycles, which has sparked opposition from the locals.

Expressing their concerns, residents and business owners emphasized the potential adverse effects of implementing pay parking, particularly on local enterprises such as shack owners and water sports operators. The decision has also been criticized for causing inconvenience to both tourists and locals who frequent the renowned Colva Beach.

Arun Kalekar, an auto-rickshaw owner at Colva Circle, expressed apprehensions about the impact on his business and the livelihoods of shack owners. He pointed out that tourists might prefer exploring alternative beaches due to the added expenses. Kalekar urged the tourism department to consider the grievances of the people before making a final decision.

Caitan Noronha, a local resident, directed blame towards the panchayat for the controversial move. The discontent among the citizens has prompted a call for a reconsideration of the decision.

Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the importance of the tourism department listening to the concerns raised by locals and Goans. Viegas urged a thorough evaluation of the impact on residents and businesses before deciding whether to enforce pay parking or rescind the policy.

The pushback against pay parking at Colva Beach highlights the delicate balance between generating revenue from tourism-related activities and ensuring the well-being of local businesses and residents. The ongoing debate underscores the need for collaborative decision-making that takes into account the perspectives and concerns of all stakeholders involved.
