NEW DELHI, JULY 24
Hockey India (HI) today took serious note of player Ranjita Devi’s complaint against coach MK Kaushik by referring the matter to the Delhi Police and asking it to immediately investigate the issue as it involves the allegations of outraging the modesty of a woman.
Taking a strong stand, HI also said that it will not avail the services of Kaushik and videographer Basavraj, who courted controversy by being in the company of sex workers during the tour of Canada and China, in future.
Addressing a press conference here, HI secretary general Narinder Batra said the national federation felt that the written version of the player commanded “high credibility” with specific charges being levelled against Kaushik.
“We feel that the committee does not have coercive powers to go into the issue. In view of the Supreme Court judgement in the Visakha case regarding sexual harassment at work place, which relates to Section 354 of IPC (relating to outraging the modesty of a woman), we are marking a copy to the Delhi Police Commissioner for taking suo moto notice so that this can be taken to its logical conclusion.” he said.
Batra said that the five-member committee which probed the allegations should have “recommended action and not merely suggested for action to Ministry of Sports.”
The Sports Ministry sources made it clear that the government was watching the developments very closely and would act as necessary.
Batra, meanwhile, said HI felt that certain things that have come to light that should be looked into and the case be made an example.
