PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday granted a week’s time to the contractor to transport 1,868 metric tonnes of iron ore from the Kalay Railway Station.

The contractor M/s Dessai Logistics had filed a miscellaneous civil application seeking time extension by one week to transport the balance iron ore which was unloaded at the Kalay Railway Station.

The Court found that the contractor had given convincing reasons while seeking extension. Accordingly the Court extended the time limit by a week.

Appearing on behalf of the applicant, senior advocate S S Kantak told the Court that presently 1,868 metric tonnes of iron ore had to be transported from Kalay Railway Station to Andrem Jetty, Sanvordem. He stated that all necessary permissions were in place for such transportation, which will be completed within a week.

Last month while disposing public interest litigation (PIL) writ petition filed by NGO Goa Foundation, the High Court had ordered to stop all further import of iron ore from Karnataka and its loading on trucks at the Kalay Railway Station, which was within the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Court allowed the Vedanta Goa Ltd and its contractor to transport the balance of 2,025 MT of quantity of ore from the Kalay Railway Station to the Adrem jetty since bulk of the consignment had already been lifted. The contractor had then transported 9,526 MT of ore to Adrem jetty.
