High mast non-functional at Calangute beach

CALANGUTE, MARCH 21
While visitors have been flocking to world famous Calangute beach during the day, they are quick to leave the place shortly after dusk.
This is because the beach is completely under the cover of darkness due to the failure of high mast, which has been rendered non-functional.
Taking advantage of the dark beach, many untoward incidents have been regularly taking place on the beach. Indian and foreign tourists have been complaining of misbehavior with the female tourists by unknown persons.
With the school vacations fast approaching, there would be more crowds on the beach and the darkness may prove a plus point to the pick pocketers and anti-social elements, who will be able to carry out their desired plans under the cover of darkness.
Many locals have also been complaining to the concerned authorities on the failure of the high mast lights, but nothing concrete is happening. The local electricity department has also expressed its helplessness in the matter, as the matter has been pending at the head office of electricity department.
Speaking to Herald, Junior Engineer Aras Chari said: “We have forwarded our requirement to the head office and the matter is pending due to finalisation of quotations, etc.”
When enquired if anything concrete would happen soon, Chari replied in the negative.
