SANGUEM: A high mast electricity pole at Uguem junction poses safety risk for people as its base is corroded and it can collapse any time in case of a heavy gust of wind.
More than 20 per cent of the base of this high mast pole at the Uguem cross road is corroded, due to which a gaping hole is visible. However, it is surprising that the Electricity Department has not taken any action to rectify the situation.
Villages have expressed anxiety over the precarious position of this pole.
“There is every possibility of the pole crashing in bad weather or in case a vehicle crashes into it,” said Anthony Colaco.
Another villager Vallie Menezes pointed out that there is every likelihood of the pole falling on the transformer nearby if it crashes thereby causing greater problems and regretted that the Electricity Department has failed to take any action despite bringing it to their notice.
As it is placed in the middle of the crossroads, there is every likelihood of any vehicle hitting it, said the worried villagers.
Initially, this pole was at the side of the road, but as road widening work has commenced, it has now come to the centre of the crossroad and neither the Electricity Department nor the Public Works Department has bothered to shift it back to the roadside.
