Hill cutting halted at Aquem

The Flying Squad on Sunday stopped hill cutting activity behind the Carmelite Monastery at Aquem-Margao.
No sooner the flying squad headed by Dilip Naik made its presence felt on the hillock, the driver of the heavy machinery working at the site abandoned the machine and fled from the spot.
Naik along with police personnel inspected the site and promised to file a report after verification of the facts.
He told Herald that the flying squad has no idea whether the real estate builder has obtained the necessary permission for the hill cutting or not since there was no board displayed nor any person present at the site. “We will verify the matter on Monday before filing a report for appropriate action”, Naik said.
Incidentally, the flying squad was intimated by the Chief Town Planner Morad Ahmed to rush to the spot following complaints of hill cutting activity. Naik said the squad has stopped another hill cutting and transportation of mud from Aquem area of the city on Sunday morning.
A resident of Aquem staying near the Carmelite Monastery Milagrina said that the hill cutting was going on for the last couple of days and it was only after the Chief Town Planner was contacted that the flying squad came and stopped the work.
Sources in the know said the authorities initially failed to respond to the phone calls to stop the hill cutting activity and came on the spot only the complaint was lodged with the CTP.
