History lovers celebrate Mahashivratri in Chandor

MARGAO: The History Lovers’ Group visited the old Shiva Temple in Chandor to commemorate the Hindu festival of Mahashivratri on Monday.

The group, led by its founder and president Yogesh Nagvekar, paid their respects at the site that now contains only the remains of the 11th century Shiva Temple, which is preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. What remains are the temple foundations, a ‘nandi’ without its head and a dried-up well.
The group also thanked historian Prajal Sakhardande, whose book had provided them with more knowledge about the temple’s history and architecture. Nagvekar explained that the temple was located inside a fort of what was then known as Chandrapur, which was the first capital of Goa under the Kadamba dynasty.
