MARGAO: Cheema Paul, an alleged notorious criminal known for his involvement in multiple housebreaking thefts across Goa, has been arrested by Fatorda police. Cheema, 29, was apprehended along with his accomplice Arjun Dessai in connection with the theft of gold worth Rs 50 lakh from a house in Fatorda.
The duo allegedly broke into the residence of Debra Fernandes on December 4, and stole gold ornaments worth Rs 50 lakh. PSI Amin Naik said that the police managed to recover most of the stolen gold during the arrest. The duo was apprehended in Margao.
Both Cheema Paul and Arjun Dessai have been charged under Sections 454, 457, and 380 of the IPC. Cheema, originally from Cansaulim but presently residing in Bicholim, was identified as the prime suspect due to the similarity in the modus operandi of this housebreaking theft and a previous case in Curchorem, for which he was arrested earlier. The police initiated the investigation after receiving a complaint from the victim, Debra Fernandes, who reported the theft of gold ornaments kept in a cupboard in her sister’s flat. During the investigation, the police used a dog squad and fingerprint experts. Fifty per cent of the stolen property has been recovered. The two accused were produced before the JMFC Margao, where they were remanded to five days of custody for further investigation.
