SANGUEM: The sudden decision by the Chief Ministe drew severe criticism from some quarters of society; particularly at a time when the Sanguem Municipal Council and all other political heads in Sanguem had planned to make grocery items at the door step of the people from Friday.

In the morning, a large number of people made a beeline to the designated shops in Sanguem.
Two separate lines were made, one each for men and women, to ease the mad rush to buy groceries. The men in uniform present in the market also made the people stand at a distance of one metre from each other. However, except for the maintenance of distance of one metre, majority of the people who came for purchases were seen without wearing masks and were freely conversing with each other.
It may be recalled that the Sanguem Municipal Council, Deputy Collector along with other stakeholders had earlier made elaborate plans to supply desired provisions to the door step of the people. Similarly, ex-MLA Subhash Phaldessai and social worker Savitri Kavlekar had also announced a volunteer list, which would take care of the door-to-door supply to the needy during the period of lockdown.
Ironically since the shopkeepers could not control the crowd with ease, the shops were closed by the afternoon session with many people having to return home without their desired groceries.
Meanwhile, the Sanguem Municipality is likely to take over the responsibility of the delivery of grocery items to the door step of the people from Saturday subject to the availability of the grocery items with the shop owners. Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar has also requisitioned goods for onward supply to the people.
