MARGAO: Allaying apprehensions raised by local residents over the disposal of bio-medical waste, Hospicio hospital on Monday maintained that the bio-medical waste disposed off in a pit within the hospital premises is not hazardous and has been dumped in the pit after due treatment.
Hospicio medical superintendent Dr P Naschinolkar said the hospital follows a system whereby the waste is first shredded by the personnel, before they are packed in the bags and disposed off in the pit. “The waste is then treated with bleaching power, calcium before mud is dumped on the plastic bags containing the waste,” he said.
Referring to the apprehensions raised by some local residents over the disposal of the waste in pits, Dr Naschinolkar said that the waste is being dumped right within the premises of the hospital and after proper treatment as per set guidelines.
Replying to a question on the cockroach menace affecting the hospital, he said that the menace has reduced in recent times after the authorities sprayed pesticides in the hospital premises.
