PANJIM: A 46-year-old newlywed woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her in-laws house in Anjuna. No suicide note was found from the spot.

The victim has been identified as Seema, who tied the knot with Gaurish Chodankar with full wedding rituals at a temple in Anjuna, on Saturday. Hours later, her body was found hanging in a room.

Police suspect that the incident occurred between 3 am and 5 am on Sunday. The body was first seen by her brother-in-law who later alerted his family. Police were soon called to the crime scene.

The police said the victim, hailing from Margao had an arranged marriage with Gaurish. The reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained while Sub-Divisional Magistrate has already begun an inquiry, since the death has occured before 7 years of marriage.

“Based on the findings of the SDM, the police will take appropriate action,” said an officer.

A post-mortem will be conducted on Monday after which the body will be handed over to the family.
