The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, has emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026. The party secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, marking a remarkable debut for a political outfit formed just two years ago. However, despite this strong performance, TVK has fallen short of the majority mark of 118, pushing the state towards a hung assembly.
The situation becomes slightly more complex as Vijay has won from two constituencies and will have to vacate one, reducing TVK’s effective strength to 107 seats. In such a scenario, the working majority mark also drops to 117, meaning the party still requires 10 additional MLAs to form the government.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance secured 73 seats, while the NDA finished third with 53 seats. Interestingly, no party outside these three blocs managed to win a single seat, making smaller alliance partners crucial in the government formation process.

What Happens Next? Scenarios Explained
One of the most likely options for TVK is to secure support from smaller parties within the DMK alliance. Parties like the Indian National Congress (INC), CPI, CPI(M), and VCK collectively hold enough seats to help TVK cross the majority mark. There have already been indications that sections within these parties may be open to supporting Vijay.
Another possibility is outside support from the entire DMK alliance, which would allow Vijay to form the government without major hurdles while maintaining opposition unity at the national level. However, given that Vijay has positioned DMK as his primary political rival, such an arrangement remains uncertain.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) could also play a role, but public statements so far suggest reluctance to align with TVK. Moreover, TVK’s clear opposition to the BJP complicates any potential understanding involving the NDA.
