How ‘SMART’: Panjim will be waterlogged soon

MLA Babush Monserrate says there will be water-logging along the 18th June Road as works along this route will be undertaken after monsoon

PANJIM: The very few Ponjekars who are still dreaming that their Panjim will not witness any flooding should be prepared for the obvious nightmare.

However, their hopes were dashed when local MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate categorically stated that he cannot assure that the State’s capital city will not experience flooding this monsoon.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the ongoing Smart City works, Monserrate said, “As far as the 18th June Road is concerned, when monsoon arrives, there will be water logging. We have left the road untouched and works

will be undertaken along the stretch only after monsoon.”

“The work of the main storm water drainage from Kundaikar Nagar to River Mandovi has not been taken up as yet. All the roads will be connected to this drainage. This work will be tendered later,” he said.

He said at present footpaths have been left out and as far as roads are concerned, all have been completed and added that some of the works will be taken up after monsoon.

When O Heraldo drew his attention towards quality of works, he said, “There are specifications in the tender on how to maintain quality. If quality is not maintained then we will come to know.”

With regards to bus stop designs, he said, “Let the road works get ready. I know, Panjim requires bus stops as these look like cowsheds. We had discussed the matter last time. We will take it up again. This model is to be changed.”

He also said that a structure housing a restaurant at St Inez will be demolished.
