Huge boulder atop Caranzalem hill poses threat to residents below

PANJIM: A huge boulder hanging precariously on the hill near Green Rosary High School at Maddint-Caranzalem is posing threat to residents as it can anytime lose its grip and roll down on several houses which mostly belong to weaker section of Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) residential area. 

Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) councilor Nelson Cabral said that if no action is taken by competent authorities, several houses will get destroyed.

Cabral said the landslide occurred on July 9 due to which a huge boulder is hanging precariously on the hill and it can roll down and cause massive disaster to several houses situated below. He has appealed to concerned authorities to initiate immediate measures to avert loss of life and damage to the property.

On July 12, Panjim Station Fire Officer (SFO) Rupesh Sawant along with sub-officer Francisco X Azavedo conducted the site inspection wherein they found a huge boulder hanging on the hill  thereby posing risk to nearby houses. The fire personnel immediately requested the CCP councillor to approach the office of CCP or PWD for necessary assistance in clearing the boulder while, any other assistance required will be provided by the fire personnel.

Meanwhile, as a preventive measures, Cabral has cordoned the areas below the boulder with heavy ropes and metal in a bid to stop it from rolling down.
