VASCO: A truck carrying coal from MPT spilled huge quantity of coal on Chicalim-Airport road in Chicalim on Monday night.
The incident occurred after the tailgate of coal truck suddenly got opened on the speed breaker and huge quantity of coal cargo spilled on the road. The same was cleared shortly.
Taking serious note of the incident GAC Convenor Custodio D’Souza said, “The incident that reported on Monday night vindicates our claims that coal transportation by road continues to contribute towards pollution in Vasco and at other areas of the State. This also proves that MPT, Adani, JSW are least bothered about the lives of the people. We demand that the Vasco MLA and other the State administration take cognizance of the incident and take MPT and its coal handling agencies to task.”
“The way MMC took cognizance of ammonia tanker mishap and assured to stop transportation of ammonia from MPT, it should also stop all coal handling at MPT,” he demanded.
Anti-coal activist Sanjay Redkar said, “Actually the driver must have been over speeding and thus the tailgate got opened and about 10 percent of coal cargo from overloaded truck spilled on the road. This is highly objectionable. We demand that that the way government intends to make installation of the speed governors in all taxis compulsory, they should also put the same conditions for all types of heavy vehicles as such incidents pose high risk to citizens.”
