CURCHOREM: Finally, Curchorem vendors heaved a big sigh of relief as the huge tree that existed at the entrance of the market was pruned by Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) by using crane cutter machine on Wednesday.
Several vendors were selling vegetables and other items near the fish market in the vicinity of the tree. The huge tree was posing danger to the property and life of the vendors. Several business activities were being conducted in shops under the tree. There was a fish and meat market in the vicinity which remains crowded throughout the day.
The vegetable vendors were demanding with the municipality for the last several years, to cut down the tree which has existed over their shops for many years. The forest department official also inspected the site but no action had been initiated. When asked why the tree was not cutting from the roots since it will bloom again during the rainy season, the chairperson of CCMC Dr Jasmine Braganza said that it cannot cut from the bottom because shops are close by.
“The wooden structures of the shops existed close to the trees all around and therefore it was difficult to cut it down from the bottom. Therefore, to avoid any casualties it is decided at least to prune the tree and accordingly we had given a contract to do so after obtaining necessary permission from the Quepem Deputy Collector,” Braganza said.
