PONDA: In a drive against haphazard parking and traffic violations, Ponda police fined hundreds of vehicle users in the last few days.
Since Ponda lacks sufficient parking space, haphazard parking leads to traffic congestion; to prevent such situations, signboards are erected all over the town for the benefit of vehicle users. However, notwithstanding the signboards, vehicles were being parked even at ‘No Parking’ areas and the same was causing traffic jams in the town.
Therefore, in order to bring traffic sense among vehicle users, the Ponda police have launched a drive against traffic violations and wrong parking by fining the errant motorists.
The traffic police officials said they were fining Rs 100 for each traffic violation and wrong parking; they reportedly fined hundreds of vehicles in the last few days. Cars parked at ‘No Parking’ areas were clamped, they were released after the drivers paid Rs 100 fine.
The police also fined vehicles with high beam lights, small size number plates and non-functional headlights.
Meanwhile, a driver expressed resentment over the police drive saying, “There is no space for parking in Ponda, so, wherever we find some pace we park our vehicles there. We will not violate the traffic rules if the government provides us with parking spaces.”
“Ponda has fewer parking places, but receives hundreds of vehicles daily. Some of the parking spaces have been encroached on by shopkeepers. Before fining us, the government should provide us with parking spaces. Some vehicles are seen parked, the whole day, in one particular space on either sides of the road. Due to this, other vehicles do not get space for parking,” he added.
