MARGAO: Gaurav Katiyar, aged 29, native of Lucknow, who was arrested for murder of 27-year-old Sharda Nagar, native of Diksha Gangawar, was remanded to five days police custody by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Margao Saturday.
Meanwhile, police said they have recorded the statements of five persons including some tourists.
Gaurav who was working as a restaurant manager at a five star hotel at Colva was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife at a beach in South Goa. The accused who is booked under Section 302 of IPC for committing murder, has confessed to the crime, disclosed Cuncolim police.
Police investigations revealed that the accused after murdering her tried to portray the death as a case of drowning, and claimed he had left the beach to bring some food for her.
Cuncolim police said that the accused might have decided to kill his wife of one-and-a-half years, may be because he suspected that she was having an extramarital affair. However police said that investigation and statement to be recorded from family members will throw more light on the issue.
Police said that cause of death will only be known following the post-mortem report. The added that the family of the victim has been contacted and they are likely to reach Goa on Sunday. Police feel that the accused drowned her in the water and suffocated her to death.
Police investigation has revealed that husband and wife visited Rajbag beach at Cabo-de-Rama, around 3:30 pm on Friday on a scooter and the incident occurred thereafter. Police said that the scooter might have taken on rent or borrowed from neighbours.
On the way, both had food at a hotel and then reached the beach. Police have seized the scooter and inquiry is on to ascertain its ownership. Police said that after reaching Cabo-de-Rama, the accused took his wife to a rocky stretch of the beach and then went into the sea.
According to police, he drowned his wife following an argument with her and said he suffocated and drowned her and said he had gone to get some food.
After suffocating her to death he left the beach, however some tourist spotted him and informed police. According to police post mortem report will reveal the injuries.
The process of recording statements has begun, said police. It is learnt that in a local video, the accused was seen leaving the water and then returning.
