PANJIM: A North Goa Additional Sessions Court has sentenced a man and two women to six months in jail in connection with the suicide of Manisha Gawas whose body was found floating in the tunnel of Tillari Canal at Dodamarg way back in 2012.
Out of the seven accused charge-sheeted for the offence of abetting the suicide, the court sentenced the deceased woman’s husband Masso Gawas, his sister Ashiki Gawas alias Kunda and accused persons’ relative Jyostna Gawas to six months of simple imprisonment and fine of Rs 5,000 each.
As per the prosecution led by public prosecutor Archana Bhobe, the accused mentally and physically tortured the victim. During the hearing of the case, Bhobe argued that Masso and Manisha had a love marriage, but eventually Masso was allegedly into an extra marital affair which upset Manisha.
“After the marriage, Masso and Manisha initially resided at his sister’s house at Valpoi and thereafter they lived at Kharpal in Dodamarg. Ashiki joined them later and another 21-year-old girl also began living with the couple. There was an affair between Masso and the 21-year-old on account of which there would be fights between Masso and Manisha. The accused instigated her to commit suicide,” the prosecution stated.
The defence however denied the allegation. On hearing both the parties, Ad hoc District Judge-I (fast track court) Shabnam Shaikh sentenced the three accused and slapped the fine amount to be paid to the victim’s family. Since the accused have already undergone the jail term, the court has set off the sentence.
