MARGAO: A husband and wife duo from Canacona was killed in a gruesome accident reported at Gulem- Canacona on Tuesday morning when a luxury bus collided with their two-wheeler.
Two others, including an unidentified foreign national were injured in the mishap, and were admitted to the South Goa District Hospital, Margao.
Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas identified the deceased as Paik Katu Waghonkar, 45, who was riding the ill-fated motorcycle, and his wife, pillion rider Priyanka Waghonkar, 35, from Chapoli, Canacona. The driver of the bus, N Nagaraja of Karnataka had fled from the accident spot but was later arrested. The Canacona police said that he was booked for rash and negligent driving causing death.
According to the police, the intercity bus proceeding from Karwar to Margao hit the couple’s motorcycle head on, throwing both victims off the bike.
While the motorcycle fell off the road, Paik fell on the road and sustained head injuries. His wife Priyanka was caught in one of the tyres of the bus and got dragged along with the bus.
The bus careened off the road and landed in the fields below, coming to a halt 100 metres away after hitting and bringing down a tree. Two of the bus passengers were also injured. Sonal Pinto, 32, suffered a dislocated shoulder and a 22-year-old female foreign tourist sustained a head injury.
