MARGAO: The last time I ate rice was on February 26, and now on March 7, said Mahima Monica Pratap, a student of Curtorim, and stranded in Ukraine who reached home safely on Sunday, while her brother Rutvik Pratap who was studying aerospace engineering in Ukraine reached home on Monday.

However, another student from Curtorim named Jomark Dias also reached safely in India.

Speaking to Herald Mahima expressed relief to see her parents over in Goa, and felt relieved after reaching home safely.

Mahima was doing her third year in medicine at Zaporizhzhya State Medical University in Ukraine, and her brother was in war torn Kyiv, a place bombarded by the Russian army.

“It is not true that the Indian Embassy in Ukraine informed us well in advance about the war and the other arrangements made to move to safe places”, said Mahima.

She further said that she along with other students had to struggle a lot to reach the borders, as they travelled nearly 33 hours from University to the border of Hungary.

“There were nearly 350 students in one compartment of the train, and the train was packed. Before moving towards the border for safety I was hiding in the bunker for almost one week. We had no proper food. The last time I ate rice was on February 26, and now on March 7”, said 21-year-old Mahima explaining about the struggle in war torn Ukraine.

“There was no harassment from the Ukrainian army”, she claimed.
