BAMBOLIM: You can take a man out of Goa, but you can never take Goa out of a man. As he mingled with members of the genteel Goan society, most of whom continue to have not just strong connects but tug at heart strings at the mention of Portugal, PM Antonio Costa tugged at his Goan heartstrings and remembered how he read Herald extensively during his last visit here in 1979. Herald used to be published in Portuguese then.
But this time around, 38 years later, Herald welcomed and saluted him on his arrival in Goa, with a Portuguese headline Bem vindo Sua Excelência, Goa vos saúda, or “Welcome your Excellency, Goa salutes you”. In a short conversation with Herald, invited for a formal reception he hosted for member of Goan civil society, he warmly said, “I liked your headline in Portuguese. Thank you. When I came here in 1979, I remember reading Herald all the time.”
The Prime Minister also said that he did know that Herald was the first Portuguese daily in the overseas territories of the country.
A short two-minute conversation, traced a 38-year journey. For us here at Herald, we are simply proud that we were and still continue to be bridge between our societies and our lands.
Viva Goa, Viva Portugal.
