CANACONA, APRIL 16
The Income Tax (I-T) officials from Bangalore raided a wholesale liquor outlet at Nagorcem-Chaudi, Canacona, on Friday morning.
According to sources, the premises, housing liquor and other stocks, was searched and some documents were reportedly confiscated by a team of about eight I-T sleuths. Two men in Khaki were also seen guarding the place from outside and the process continued almost throughout the day.
After the news spread like wildfire, some scribes reached the site, but were kept at bay by police personnel, as unknown officials played defiant role saying: “This is just a routine process and there is nothing to say to the press.”
Electronic media and pressmen trying to video film and click photos of the IT officials inside or of the vehicle parked outside were reprimanded by the personnel and police against doing so.
It may be recalled that during the last assembly session, Opposition Leader Manohar Parrikar had raised the issue of involvement of a leading liquor company’s involvement in a huge scam involving crores of rupees and residents are suspecting that the descending of I-T sleuths at Canacona is the outcome of investigations against the allegations.
Interestingly, even though the I-T sleuths refused to divulge any details to the press, one of the members reportedly spilled the beans to a source stating: “There is swindling of enormous amount which can run into several crores of rupees by evading government taxes by this company. We are going to recover the amount by penalising the company.”
