The ICMR–National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH), Ahmedabad, has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of coal dust exposure and its health impact on workers and residents living in the vicinity of the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT). The study will focus on respiratory illnesses as well as the presence of heavy metals among those potentially affected.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, addressing concerns related to coal handling at the port, stated that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has not permitted either South West Port Limited (SWPL) or the Adani Group to handle coal beyond the limits approved in 2012. He emphasised that regulatory norms are being strictly enforced to ensure environmental and public health safety.
