In the view of the construction of proposed Borim bridge farmers are apprehensive about losing their Khazans field. All the seven Alignment are passing over Khazans. Khazans are the coastal wetlands in Goa, which are very crucial for farming in Goa as it protects field and villages from salinity intrusion and floods. This edition of street voices covered the issue of destruction of the Khazan due to construction of Borim Bridge.
The old Borim is in a precarious condition. When the vehicles pass, they rattle on the bumpy road. If some stands on the bridge one can feel the bridge vibrating. The old bridge is in a dangerous condition and it can collapse anytime. My only appeal to the government is that, try to construct the bridge as early as possible whether is it has to be constructed through the fields, water or mountains. Today agitations are common whenever a new project is proposed, the government should appoint experts and try to figure out how the construction of new bridge can be sustainably implemented.

Paying compensation to farmers will not replace the Khazan. There is nothing beneficial, it will permanently destroys nature. Previously several damages had been done to the nature such as low-lying area filling, cutting trees in the name of development and now it is the Khazans. Even if the bridge is built on stilts, they will cut a hill, chop the trees and bring the mud. If nature is destroyed there won’t be any beauty and natural assets left in Goa. This is the reason why so many natural calamities are taking place in Goa.
