MARGAO: Condemning the efforts by some people to stop the work of constructing a railway over bridge between Curtorim and Chandor, Cuncolim MLA Clafasio Dias asserted that it was an important link and added that if necessary he would stand at the site and get the work completed.
Clafasio accompanied by South Western Railway Officials, panchayat members of Sao Jose de Areal, Guirdolim and Curtorim along with the husband of the newly elected Zilla Panchayat member from Curtorim inspected the site recently after receiving complaints from the railway authorities that the work was stopped.
“I fail to understand why people should object to this bridge as it has nothing to do with railway double-tracking or coal transportation,” he said, insisting that it was a much-needed project.
Clafasio said he would stand at the site if necessary to ensure that the work is completed.
Guirdolim Deputy Sarpanch Brian Pereira pointed out that nearly one-and-a-half year ago his panchayat had resolved that the railway gate – LC 18, which is next to the Chandor Railway Station, would be permanently closed only after the rail over bridge is constructed.
He said the rail under bridge to replace the level crossing is nearing completion and is expected to be commissioned by February. “However, until this over bridge is constructed the level crossing cannot be permanently closed,” he said adding that residents of his village will stand by the work and resist those opposing it.
Curtorim former sarpanch Rui Menezes said the over head bridge is a major link between Curtorim and Curchorem and will benefit the people of Chandor too and added that he would stand by MLA Clafasio to get the work completed.
