PANJIM: In a bid to make Goa an educational hub, the BJP-led government is considering Union Human Resource Development ministry (HRD) proposal of setting up of Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) at the electronic city proposed at Tuvem in Pernem taluka.
Moreover, with Central Cabinet granting its nod for setting up Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Goa at Loliem in South Goa, the first batch of 120 students is likely to commence from this academic year from the temporary campus at Goa College of Engineering (GEC) Farmagudi.
Speaking to media persons, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that Goa is moving towards becoming an educational hub. “Union Ministry has proposed setting up IIIT in Goa and asked for 2 lakh sq mtrs of land. We are planning to give them land at Tuvem, where we have proposed electronic city,” he said.
The proposal has been pending before the State since 2010, wherein along with Goa, Centre had proposed setting up IIIT in 20 states on public private partnership (PPP) model. However, Goa never showed any interest in this regard.
“We are now working on the proposal,” the chief minister said.
Meanwhile, welcoming the Central Cabinet decision to approve IIT for Goa, Parsekar said that considering the approval, the first batch of IIT students can commence from the coming academic year from GEC campus.
“Recently, the officials had inspected the IIT site at Loliem, which is spread across an area of 12-13 lakh sq mtrs. They were positive. The cabinet decision will give major boost to IT sector,” he added.
Chief Minister informed that government has already handed over land for National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Cuncoliem.
