IIT row: Sanguem MLA flayed for allegedly silencing farmers’ voices

“The fight led by the local farmers is not just to protect their lands, but is the fight of this land against human greed, it is the fight of future generations and the voiceless against genocide at our hands, it is the fight of and for each one of us,” said activist Abhijit Prabhudesai

MARGAO: Following the recent clashes over the proposed IIT project in  Sanguem, activist Abhijit Prabhudesai condemned the actions of the group led by Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldesai and his wife for trying to silence the local farmers who are opposing the project planned on agricultural land.

“The farmers’ meet on the proposal to locate IIT Goa on their farmlands was violently stopped by goons and the MLA’s wife. Land grabbing abounds all around us, using every excuse. I salute the farmers, our only defenders!,” said Prabhudesai, while sharing videos to back his allegations.

“The MLA and his wife must be punished for abusing their powers and for the violence used to try to suppress the voice of Cotarli farmers. A few rich and powerful persons are driven purely by the lure of speculative rise in land prices, which will enable them to make a big profit from selling lands in neighbouring areas, at the cost of the residents of Sanguem,’ he added. “The fight led by the local farmers is not just to protect their lands, but is the fight of this land against human greed, it is the fight of future generations and the voiceless against genocide at our hands, it is the fight of and for each one of us,” he said.
