COLVA: Despite Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant recent directives to the Goa Police to enforce a firm crack down on the banned bullfights commonly known as dhirios occurring in Goa, this illegal activity once again occurred in the Salcete coastal belt on Tuesday escaping the attention of the law enforcement authorities.
Sources inform Herald that in utter violation of the High Court verdict against these dhirios, the organisers have now resorted to sending out messages informing the dhirio enthusiasts on the popular social media platform Whatsapp. Interestingly, there were around half a dozen dhirios planned for Tuesday.
The first dhirio was held at the Trinity beach at Vaddie-Benaulim at 7 am followed by another dhirio at Seraulim at 11 am, Varca at 3.30 pm and another at Colva.
Interestingly, reliable sources disclose that “another dhirio that was to be staged on Monday, February 15 morning around 7 am at Seraulim between the two bulls Silver King (Ramu) and Pai was hastily called off after the animal rights activist Hanumant Parab of the NGO known as ‘Gau Rakshak Manch’ who received this information immediately intimated the senior police officials regarding the dhirio. The nephew of a South Goa heavyweight politician is learnt to be pressurising the Colva police to be lenient towards these dhirio organisers with the Colva police then conveniently either expressing their ignorance over the dhirio or deliberately reaching late after the dhirio concludes. The spectators at these illegal dhirios are known to place their bets amounting to several lakhs even pawning their family jewellery if they are strapped for funds.”
When contacted, Colva Police divulged that no complaint had been lodged regarding the illegal dhirios being organised in their jurisdiction nor had any information regarding the banned dhirios.
